William Boyd’s Captains Day 2014
Tue July 08 2014
Here are the Kings…
… and Queens of the Court
The weather and conditions were perfect for William Boyd’s 2014 Captain’s Day on Saturday 14th June.
The theme of the tournament followed hot on the heels from the Giro d’Italia with the teams being named after the famous cycling teams of Garmin, Sky, Cannondale, Movistar, Argos, Shimano and Astana.
Each team played four matches each lasting 10 minutes with short deuces. Each game was worth a point to the team. If any team won a game to love that team would gain a bonus point. The two teams who made it to the final were Team Cannondale captained by John Foster and featuring Eileen Carlin, Handy Boyd, Anne Orr, Ruth Logan, Mark Gowdy, Sara McCorkell and Barbara Walker and Team Garmin captained by John Mercer and featuring David Mills, Cathryn Law, Raymond McNeill, Lynn Bunting, Elaine Tougher and Tina Magee.
It was a very closely fought final with Garmin emerging as champions by 1 solitary point 8 – 7. The one point tournament was won with a stunning performance from Downshire Evergreen Chris Mitchell.
Afternoon tea accompanied the tennis with Mrs Boyd’s pavlova and chocolate cake proving to be a big smash! The evening event kicked off at 7pm with the Captain’s Roast Hog followed by dancing and the side show of England trying to play Italy in their first FIFA World Cup game.
In terms of organising this year’s Captain’s Day thanks must go to Anne Sloan, Hilary Emerson, Sandra Gowdy, Jill Conn, Victoria Gallop, the the Thursday Morning Ladies, the SMAC Tennis Academy, DTC Sub Committee, and the best Tournament Director on the tour Mr Patrick Knowles and of course all our ballot contributors thank you for donating so generously.
